The Ryzen 3 1200 we're reviewing today ticks at 3.10 GHz, with 3.40 GHz boost, and if your CPU cooling is up to the task, the XFR (extended frequency range) feature will add another 50 MHz to the boost frequency for a single core.
In a matter of just a few months, AMD has gone from irrelevant to revolutionary, rebooting the company in a way that seemed impossible just a few years ago.
The Ryzen 3 1300X managed to outpace the similarly priced Core i3-7350K, but the Ryzen 3 1200 was well behind all the Intel parts.
There wasn’t much to choose between the AMD and Intel parts when idling, but the 1300X’s peak temperature of 48°C was five degrees better than the Core i3 – and the Ryzen 3 1200 topped out at a cool 41°C.The Ryzen 3 1200 also drew level with the Core i3 in those trickier gaming tests.That’s about as much electricity as I’d like to pump through this chip, though, and it didn’t deliver a huge boost to performance – the 1300X’s Cinebench scores only jumped from 150cb and 551cb to 158cb and 571cb with the tweak applied.The more affordable Ryzen 3 1200 matches the Core i3-7350K for multi-threaded performance, although its lesser single-threaded abilities mean it’s a tad slower overall.The two Ryzen chips scored 366 pixels-per-second (PPS) and 323PPS in the single-core test, which is behind the 436PPS result from the Core i3 chip. AMD has had a great run so far this year with its Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 products easily keeping up with or defeating Intel.
And the 1300X, once again, was reasonably close to the multi-threaded performance of the much pricier Core i5-7640X. Those two chipsets are also the only two AM4 parts to support overclocking.Both chips competed well with Intel in thermal tests and power consumption, and both performed well in games, too: they weren’t a hindrance at 1080p, and at 1440p and with higher graphics settings both Ryzen chips outpaced the Core i3 CPU.That said, always check what a motherboard is offering, because most manufacturers supplement their chosen chipsets with third-party hardware to add more connectivity – such as extra SATA ports or M.2 sockets, or better audio.The A320, X300 and A/B300 chipsets are designed for entry-level and small-form-factor PCs, which means no multi-GPU support and a reduced number of PCI lanes, SATA ports and USB connections.That’s a good result for AMD, which uses its extra cores to beat the Core i3 chip – but it gets better.
Next, we switched to the game Far Cry Primal, on the title's High preset, and saw interesting results from AMD. Rather than the 16 percent difference we saw previously between the two Ryzen 3 chips, here it jumped to 21 percent. Crucially, they’re both cheaper, too.The top Ryzen 3 chip retains the X suffix, which means it wields the full 100MHz boost available across one of its cores.The B350 chipset is next in the range, and it supports just CrossFire.
(You can't actually buy this cooler separately, but AMD will be offering its step-up model, the LED-illuminated Stealth Max cooler soon.) At 1080p in this title, the Ryzen 3 1200 system managed an average of 82fps, which is 4fps lower than what we saw when we tested the higher-end Ryzen 3 1300X. The main reason: Graphics performance typically has much more to do with what graphics card you have installed than what processor you're using—especially when you're using a fairly powerful chip like an AMD Ryzen 7 or Intel's competing Core i7-7700K.The Ryzen processors still employ pins on the CPU itself, not the socket-side pins and on-chip contacts that Intel has long since moved to with its consumer CPUs.There are, of course, quite a few other details about the Ryzen platform in general to consider if you're building or buying a system, including the finer details of the chip architecture, the various AMD Ryzen-compatible motherboard chipsets, and motherboard details and pricing.
So rather than rehash it all here again, we'll point you to our earlier Ryzen reviews if you need a refresher or are just getting up to speed with Ryzen.There's a lot to like with the Ryzen 3 1200, especially when compared to higher-priced Intel Core i3 chips with fewer cores, like the Core i3-7350K. Clearly, some games prefer higher-end chips more than others.On the AMD side of things, we excluded any previous-generation FX chips.
But if performance is key to you, the higher-clocked Ryzen 3 1300X is a better buy for $20 more.
