It is written in Gump’s perspective, the protagonist who embarks on many more fascinating adventures.This narrative covers the allies’ consecutive defeats as the axis defeated most of North Africa, Europe, and the Far East. The novel describes how the desires for the westward adventure of Brigadier Stephen W. Kearny match with the expansionists interests of the United States President James K. Polk. and won’t be buying Groom’s “Vicksburg” either. Fortunately, a new opportunity to participate in championship football sets him back in the limelight and in money as well. To the generation of Americans who lived through it, the Second World War was the defining event of the twentieth century, and the defining events of that war were played out in the year 1942. If Groom’s efforts aren’t “history” on account of the fact that nothing is sourced, and no footnotes are included, then CWT isn’t history either by the same definition. Conversations with the Enemy (1982) narrates the story of American Prisoner of War soldier who escapes after being held a prisoner in Vietnam and heads back home only to be arrested 14 years later for desertion. Rather, he is targeting the reader who loved Gump, saw the PBS Civil War series, has stopped at a Civil War battle or two out of curiosity, and/or is familiar with Groom’s popular history series. The vast majority of them are serious students of the Civil War, and that’s the audience that I write to and for. If you like his work, then by all means, please read it and enjoy it.Having read Groom’s “Shrouds of Glory,” I suspect the book is a synthesis of secondary sources retold in Groom’s words — hence no footnotes. However, I, for one, choose not to spend money on them because I refuse to buy any book that does not provide references for its historical interpretations.
