I heard some crap that the x8 chipset link was done to appease the mobo makers. I was in the same case as yours (6600k, RX480), wanted to upgrade the entire PC but we knew Zen 3 / Ampere / RDNA2 would come out this year.I had the 6600k overclocked to 4.6 so it took a very long time to make the upgrade worthwhile.
In the meantime, I upgraded my 2133MHz RAM kit to a 3600MHz one just so that I don't have a ton of stuff to resell when the time comes.If I were in your position I would wait it out since it's probably not that far off (I think around October), but maybe you need the upgrade now for the games you want to play.

The leap in performance has been great. Im expecting a small clock boost and the latency reduction on top of their normal IPC gains 9-18%.Games and other software will start catching up to the higher core counts so that's a good point about having more cores. That being said it will still be a much bigger jump compared to OG Zen to Zen+ but not as big as Zen+ to Zen 2.My last built is 5 years now so I am looking to upgrade this year.
