We were back in Psychoville, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s post-League of Gentlemen horror-comedy series, which was unfairly canned after two series in 2011. Something a little dark, a bit eerie, very clever, very classy. This is the mantra I would like to apply to episode two, Death Be Not Proud.Sadly, it doesn’t quite land but there are a couple of moments which prove there is a better, more coherent piece of storytelling in there somewhere.
Or El Dorado. If Reece and Steve set out to pay homage to their longstanding fans and older work, then fair enough, but it almost felt uneeded. Was she possessed? 9 is an anthology series, with each episode featuring a new story, with a new setting and new characters. This episode will probably hold more sentiment than others overtime, so indeed, credit where credit is due.Edit: It does work well as a stand-alone episode, as well as a fan service for Psychoville lovers so I applaud Reece and Steve for that. But the only flat they can afford has a dark and sinister past, a past that demands to be heard. Occult props. Now I’ve had time to sleep on it, I think you’re right. Expect the unexpected. Inside No. It almost felt like the episode was just a way to finish David’s Psychoville story, and then the actual ending was rushed. Any other writer would've done an official reunion episode for a returning beloved show, but not Reece or Steve. S05 E02.

Just seemed like they were trying to get an extra twist in there for the sake of it.I completely agree! We should know with this duo by now that things don’t always stay dead and Psychoville was exhumed before our very eyes in this endlessly self-referential crossover episode. I didn’t particularly love the ending either, but I guess maybe the point of it was more of a fan service than writing an amazing twist. As soon as David turned up, however, we suddenly found ourselves in a world of grotesque prosthetics, high-minded toilet humour and the most macabre of imaginations. 9 and to always expect the unexpected.
I think it does sum up what Inside no9 is all about (unpredictability).
Next time you switch on Endeavour, you might be watching Morse.
9 is that whether or not the episode really hits its stride, it’s still fundamentally worth a watch.
You worried for Coleman. As David told the tale of how his mother had haunted him after her death (cajoling him to murder, as ever), there was an element of “greatest hits” to proceedings: the Superman dance, the skin-crawling intimacy between mother and son, the Bontempi keyboard, the “bad murder” line getting a fresh airing, a wonderful cameo from the cack-handed, hook-handed children’s entertainer Mr Jelly. It didn’t really add anything to the Psychoville storyline, and as a stand-alone Inside no9 episode it felt a bit gimmicky using characters from another show, (although I don’t agree with previous comments on here, such as they run out of material etc). Those who didn’t watch Psychoville would have been left scratching their heads; fans will have cheered from their sofas. Inside No.
