On the plus side, finding it is incredibly easy. Dogs are also able to use this trail … The arms of the fork rejoin in another mile. I must caution against trying to hike past the spring portion of this trail. We arrived around 7am and it was about a half full. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and backpacking and is best used from May until October. The Arizona Game & Fish Department welcomes visitors and has a self-guided tour of the hatchery. It follows Horton Creek up to the mouth of Horton Spring.
Nonetheless, be sure to make a little noise now and then so you don’t surprise one. Both of these trails access the Highline National Recreation Trail (#31). It’s not well marked and could be dangerous. There is a lot of shade, some open areas, and mixed areas. There are grassy meadows, wildflowers and places to throw in a fishing line. Be sure to arrive early as a parking is limited. Beware of the afternoon storms that often move in during July and August.
At a Glance. When the trail forks, you can take either the left or the right which follows the creek through campsites.
If you can be there earlier or later, or on a cloudy day, that is better.
