About a quarter-mile from the road begins a series of small waterfalls and pools near the bottom of a narrow stone canyon. The trail ends at Highline Trail #31. The right fork takes you along the creak where you will come across several small campsites. This is a great place for kids.Canyon Creek offers soothing rewards for the adventurous, since it lies well off the highway. The rim lakes (Canyon, Bear, Knoll) drain into the the natural spring which literally gushes from the side of the rim like an an enormous faucet.The trailhead for Horton Creek Trail 285 is located in the Tonto Creek Campground.Once you cross the creek bridge you will look for parking on the left in the Horton Picnic site. Both are abundant in the area.From Payson, head east up Highway 260 through Star Valley toward the Mogollon Rim. Both forks will rejoin about 1 mi from the trailhead. The Salt River Project is now releasing an additional40 cubic feet per second into the stream at Washington Park, which has dramatically increased its flows and left the water clear and clean and cold. The river returns to civilization, often nearly exhausted, at Gisela, where it waits at the end of Forest Road 417 off Highway 87.
Fishing is available in both Horton Creek and Tonto Creek for rainbow trout. Turn left on the dirt road and this will lead you to a sign for trail #285. It’s also a great place to take photographs. As you hike east along the creek you’ll encounter several swimming holes, the first few of which are usually shallow enough for children. Fishing hiking and swimming are the main draw to Horton Creek.At .75 mi the trail forks. Near milepost 268, you will see a sign for the Tonto Fish Hatchery (Forest Road 289) which you will make a left turn and travel for 1 mi. Pedestrians only on the paths at Green Lake and Seward Park.This is in effect all day, each day. The spring runs year around. After parking, you will hike back down the road and cross the bridge.
